Preparing for the Agrégation competitive examination

Recruitment / Administrative competitions
This is a high-level competition requiring rigorous and sustained preparation.

Video presentation

The Agrégation exam is recruiting future secondary school teachers (particularly in high schools, with a 15-hour weekly teaching load) and also opens the door to the first cycle of higher education (PRAG positions); however, in the humanities, it is virtually a prerequisite for those aiming for careers in higher education and research. It is also a highly valued credential for careers outside the French National Education System. The Department of Literature at the University of Grenoble-Alpes prepares students for all written and oral exams for the agrégation in Modern and Classical Literature.

This is a high-level competition. The number of positions is much smaller than for the CAPES. Rigorous and sustained preparation is required; this should begin as soon as the exam syllabus is officially released—in May or June for the following year. The syllabus changes every year.

You must hold a master's degree to take the agrégation exam. Throughout the year, students prepare for the written exams from mid-September to late February and for the oral exams from April through early June. In addition to classes to prepare for the written exams, professors meet with students individually throughout the year to help them organize their work and overcome their specific challenges. A mock exam is held, and individual consultations are offered to eligible students.
Finally, a specific borrowing policy ensures that the materials needed for preparation are available in the university libraries.
