An Investigation into a Female Ancestor: Documenting the Labeling of Women as “Mad”

Seminar Research
May 6, 2026Saint-Martin-d'Hères - University Campus
As part of this seminar organized by the UMR Litt&Arts, Adèle Yon (a film studies researcher and chef) will present her award-winning novel *My Real Name Is Elisabeth*.

This session will be led by Agathe Salha.

In a novel that was a huge success, My Real Name Is Elisabeth, Adèle Yon tells the story of a grandmother who was forcibly institutionalized by her husband and then lobotomized. Published by Éditions du sous-sol, directed by Adrien Bosc, this work falls within the realm of research-based writing, as it concludes a doctoral research project co-supervised by Antoine de Baecque, Antonio Somaini, and Olivia Rosenthal.

Blending the personal and the political, the personal account of an investigation, and archival footage, Adèle Yon works to gradually build a community of women, which is also a community of outrage and anger. At the intersection of documented research on forced internment and a reflection on the double in cinema, this novel attempts to give a face and a voice to a long-silenced ancestor, drawing on medical records and family artifacts.

A graduate of the École Normale Supérieure, Adèle Yon is pursuing a research-creation dissertation in the SACRe laboratory, specializing in film studies; the novel *My Real Name Is Elisabeth* is the result of this doctoral research. She also works as a head chef in the Sarthe region.
