Book : La séance de cinéma. Spaces, practices, imaginaries.
Publishing and distribution
What is a cinema screening? At a time when cinema is undergoing major technological and spectator transformations, this book examines the specific nature of the cinema screening, from its spaces to its audiences, and the imaginary world it has created.
Encompassing a vast period (from the beginnings of cinema to the present day), covering diverse spaces (France, Spain, USA, Latin America, USSR...) and mobilizing sources of various types and natures, the contributions gathered together show that this plural and transversal notion of "séance" is essential for thinking about cinema and its history.
A DVD enriches the discussion, with 10 films depicting cinema screenings as places of entertainment, seduction, revelation and illusion.
Project led by Charlotte Servel, Senior Lecturer in Film Studies.
