DEPOC Project, Devices Enabling Podcast Creation

School life, Valuation, Educational innovation
DEPOC (Devices Enabling Podcast Creation) aims to develop the pedagogical, material and scientific resources needed to update and deploy new forms of professional-quality real-life writing at UGA.
This project is a continuation of the tutorials on new video writing by and for the mobile (or Mobile Journalism - MoJo) stimulated by the IdEX Formation JIN'News project (2017) at the Grenoble School of Journalism (EJDG; (double degree UGA-Sciences Po Grenoble)..

Podcasting has emerged over the last five years as one of the most promising new digital mobile writing tools, and is now establishing itself as a promising editorial (and economic) model.
Alongside short video formats, it is part of the renewal of real-life narratives in line with the centrality of platforms and socio-numerical networks in the media industry.

The IdEX DEPOC project, led by Laurie Schmitt, MCF in Information and Communication Sciences, and Chloë Salles, MCF in Journalism, aims to develop shared resources for training in podcast production. It will be run jointly by several courses at the Institut de la Communication et des Médias (ICM), including the Journalism Master's degree (UGA-Sciences Po Grenoble double degree) and two courses in the Information-Communication Master's program: the Audiovisual and Digital Media course (AVMN), and the Scientific and Technical Communication and Culture course (CCST).
The issues and players involved in new practices and new formats for writing about reality are questions that have already been incorporated into the curricula of these three courses. However, each course currently deals with these issues using different theoretical and practical tools, which would benefit from being discussed collectively and mobilized jointly.

Above all, following the example of the MoJo in the late 2010s, podcasting seems to be developing in an "artisanal" way, and ICM training courses have a role to play in stabilizing and developing theoretical resources, methods and technical tools to train future information and mediation professionals in these innovative practices.

DEPOC will have three components

  1. The purchase of equipment to set up two podcast recording studios at the ICM (one to be used primarily by the three ICM courses involved in the project for their courses, the other to be available for any podcast projects from the Grenoble university community).
  2. Coordination of an action-research project with the three Masters courses mentioned above, leading to the production of three series of tutorials on journalistic, creative and scientific podcasts.
  3. Making teaching resources (MOOCs, tutorials and toolboxes) freely available by creating a website (or updating the ICM website) and implementing an internal and external communication strategy for the available self-training materials and media. The productions developed and materials purchased will be accessible to the entireUniversité Grenoble Alpes Alpes community, as well as to users of the teaching platforms dedicated to MOOCs and SPOCs (Small Private Online Classes).
